My name is Luisah Teish and I want to welcome you to my website. On this website you will find music, art and information; classes, workshops, a calendar and links to many organizations, people and events. You are invited to join my mailing list so you can be kept abreast of the many offerings and activities available from this site.

As you move through the site, you will see that each area has multiple meanings.  For example, when you click on "A Cast of Cowries", you'll see that it addresses a storytelling series, spiritual consultations, and a storytelling DVD available for purchase.  Everything on this site is interconnected to everything else.  So browsing around will give you a holistic view of the material being offered and provide a number of ways to integrate it into your life.

Word of Mouth

This term is connected to the power of oral traditions and the spoken word.

I grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, and spent many hours along the banks of the Mississippi River.  As you know this area is rich in folklore, music and mystery. As a child, I was blessed to be surrounded by a community of elders who maintained centuries old stories and traditions.  I also found that any question I posed was met with a proverbial answer.  "Don't be like the bulldog in the hay/!" I was told. I soon learned that my intelligence was being measured by my ability to decipher proverbs and to glean life guidance from the content of stories. This influence awakened a creativity that led to me gathering materials (both oral and written).  I've become a professional storyteller, writer, and community activist for more than forty years now.

On this front page I offer you some of my favorite proverbs, jokes and sayings.  They are drawn from cultures allover the world.  Read  them, consider them, and respond if you like.
But most importantly enjoy them.

When you click on "Word of Mouth" you will soon find a selection of cds and DVDs available for purchase.

So welcome, browse around, connect, and enjoy.
Thank you
Teish
